With a stagnant housing market many people have the urge to do-up what they already have. Certainly on the Isle of Man you’ll notice plenty of new extensions being built, conservatories being added and other improvements being made around the house. One of the simplest and cheapest improvements that can be made to the look of your house is to add some blinds. We noticed that ever since we had ours done that most of the neighbours have joined in, it looks better (than bare windows and much better than nets), provides more privacy for those that front onto a road and they also have the added benefit of still letting in light but allowing you to watch your big “highly reflective” Plasma/LCD TV. If the front of your house faces south like ours then they are almost a must buy.

Getting blinds wasn’t actually a new thought for us, ever since we had the conservatory built and the blinds put up in there we’d thought about adding them to other rooms in the house. The real trouble was in trying to get somebody around to do it. The very well-known local company that did the conservatory never seemed to be available; we really did want to give them the business out of loyalty. It was only through word of mouth that we heard about a national chain that was not only highly recommended but also running a special offer at the time. They answered the phone first time (as opposed to the weeks I’d been chasing the others), they were around to measure up within 2 days. The blinds were ordered and on the Isle of Man within 12 days and when they actually came earlier than expected I got a phone call to arrange fitting the very next day. All for a very good price (Less than £90 for a large living room window).

Steampacket – Sailing To The Isle of Man

Being an island you are stuck with basically 2 ways of getting to the Isle of Man (well until they build either a really long monorail or tunnel that is), you either fly or take the boat. When it comes to sailing to the Isle of Man I’m afraid you only have one choice and that’s using the Isle of Man Steampacket Company.

The Steampacket, or Steamracket as some locals like to call it has been in operation since 1830 making it the oldest continuously operating passenger ferry company in the world. Of course in that time it has undergone many changes not only in terms of technology but also how the company has been run and structured. The current company is tied to a user agreement with the Isle of Man Government, in essence giving them a monopoly on landing passengers in Douglas. This might go some way to explaining the 30%+ profit margin the company realises for its Australian owners.

If you want to get to the Isle of Man by sea then it’s either hitch a ride or use the Steampacket! It’s certainly not cheap.

Steampacket Fleet

As of the 20/10/10 the Steampacket operate a fleet of 3. Two fast craft, namely the Manannan and Snaefell and one slower traditional ferry in the form of the Ben My Chree. Sailings are scheduled to Liverpool, Heysham, Dublin and Belfast however the exact frequency of sailings varies depending on the time of year (look here for a full current time table).

Looking for a plumber on the Isle of Man? There are certain things that you may take for granted if you don’t live on the island that can become a bit of an ordeal if you do live here. Finding a plumber is one of those things. Manx plumbers tend to charge a slightly higher hourly rate than you’ll find in the UK and in general don’t seem to be quite as keen for the work. I know a lot of plumbers will deny this but it’s certainly been my experience from the past 10 years of trying to get jobs done. Anybody who has trawled the Manx yellow pages will be very familiar with the process of leaving numerous messages only to never get a call back, or even better, to get a call back 2 weeks later! Then there are those plumbers that prefer to do larger (heating) jobs and have no interest in smaller plumbing jobs, fine if they advertise that but few do. So when it comes to finding a plumber on the Isle of Man the best advice is to go with personal recommendation from somebody you know and when you find a good plumber stick with them! The island is a small place and most people know somebody that they’d recommend.
